Butterbur

Petasites hybridus
Europeanmigraineallergyanti-spasmodic

Butterbur has emerged from folk medicine to clinical validation as both a migraine preventive and an anti-allergy herb. Its petasin compounds inhibit leukotriene and histamine release, reducing allergic rhinitis symptoms comparably to cetirizine in some trials. For migraines, it reduces attack frequency with consistent daily use. Only PA-free (pyrrolizidine alkaloid-free) standardised extracts should be used internally.

Parts Used

rhizome, leaf (PA-free extract only)

Preparations

standardised extract, capsule

Typical Dosage

50–75mg PA-free standardised extract twice daily for migraine prevention; follow product guidelines strictly

Safety & Considerations

CRITICAL: Only use PA-free (pyrrolizidine alkaloid-free) certified extracts — raw plant contains hepatotoxic PAs. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid in liver disease. Discontinue if jaundice or liver symptoms develop.
