Witch Hazel Bark

Hamamelis virginiana
Native Americanastringentvenousanti-inflammatory

Witch hazel bark and leaf contain exceptionally high tannin levels that powerfully constrict tissues, reduce inflammation, and halt minor bleeding. Widely known as a topical astringent for haemorrhoids, minor wounds, insect bites, and skin inflammation, the internal bark decoction was used by Indigenous peoples and Eclectic physicians for venous conditions, heavy menstrual bleeding, diarrhoea, and throat inflammation. Commercial witch hazel water (distillate) has lower tannin content than properly prepared bark tea.
