Best known as a beer-bittering agent, hops flower (the strobile) contains sedative compounds including 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and methylbutenol, which are formed during drying and explain hops' pronounced sleep-promoting effects. Combined with valerian, it significantly reduces sleep onset time and improves sleep quality. It also acts as a bitter digestive tonic and has mild oestrogenic activity.
